POLICY TITLE: REIMBURSEMENT FOR PERSONAL LOSS

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to provide a reasonable reimbursement for claims on loss of personal equipment while performing services to the Department.

2.0 REIMBURSEMENT FOR PERSONAL EFFECTS LOSS

The District, in its endeavor to support its members will be sensitive to personal items that are lost or damaged while performing services on behalf of the Fire District.

3.0 ITEMS CONSIDERED FOR REPLACEMENT AND OR REPAIR

Personal items considered for replacement if damaged or lost include but is not limited to, eye glasses, dentures, clothing, contact lens, hearing aids, etc.

4.0 CLAIM FILING PROCEDURE SHALL BE FOLLOWED

The procedures for reporting the loss and or damage of personal equipment shall be initiated within 72 hours of the occurrence of the loss.

5.0 CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERING CLAIMS

The following criteria are examples that may be used to evaluate the validity and reasonableness of the claim.

1. Did the loss occur during response to an emergency and or training event?

2. Were reasonable precautions taken to prevent the loss or damage?

3. Was protective clothing and equipment used properly?

4. Was the member assigned the task when the loss occurred?

6.0 CLAIMS REVIEW BOARD MAY BE APPOINTED

A claims review board may be appointed by the Fire Chief to evaluate the validity of the claim. The Claims Board shall be made up of a cross section of Department members. The findings and recommendations shall be reported to the Fire Chief.

7.0 CLAIMS REQUIRE BOARD APPROVAL

All claim settlements must be authorized by the Board of Commissioners.

8.0 PERSONAL ELECTRONICS

Personal cell phones, pagers, radios, or other portable electronic devices are not reimbursable items unless the item was being used for District purposes.
