REFERENCE: INITIATIVE 901, WASHINGTON STATE CLEAN INDOOR AIR ACT
1.0 PURPOSE
To provide compliance with Washington State Initiative 901, to provide a work environment free of second hand smoke and to protect the health and welfare of the Fire District’s employees. To control where the use of smoking materials and smokeless tobacco products may be used, in department facilities or vehicles, training grounds, or incident scenes.
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY
All members shall become familiar with and use the provisions of this policy, and refresh themselves as necessary to maintain their effectiveness.
3.0 All Fire District Buildings and Vehicles are designated as Tobacco Free.
Smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco is prohibited by any person within a Yakima County Fire District building or vehicle. Per Washington Initiative 901 smoking can not occur within twenty-five feet (25) of any doorway, window that open, exits, or ventilation intakes.
4.0
Training Facilities and sites where training occurs, smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco products is prohibited while training is being conducted. The use of tobacco products during break periods can occur in designated outside areas chosen by the Drill Master or instructor.
5.0
At incident scenes where department services are provided, smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco products shall not occur. Should such incident scenes extend for a time period where work break periods may be necessary, than a designated area may be established. Members shall determine, through the chain of command, where such designated areas exist. No use of tobacco products shall occur at rehab stations, areas outside of the rehab area may be designated.
6.0
Employees are to discard tobacco product waste i.e. cigarette butt, wrapper, container, spit, or smokeless tobacco wad in proper receptacle. Spiting on side walk, urinals, interior of buildings is prohibited. Tossing of cigarette butt on to grounds or parking areas is prohibited. It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain an clean a fresh appearance in and around District facilities.
7.0
Members are encouraged to seek and follow smoking cessation activities through their health care professional. Exposure to a know Class A carcinogen should be eliminated where ever possible.
