EFFECTIVE DATE:

REVISED:                     02/10/09

POLICY TITLE:             SPECIALIZED MOTOR VEHICLES

REFERENCE:                SOG 4-9

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that Specialized Motor Vehicles (ATV, Snow machines, Watercraft, etc.) are operated in a safe manner to protect the member and the public. The Specialized Motor Vehicle (SMV) function will be determined as firefighting, rescue, and/or both.

1.0 Specialized Motor Vehicles will be operated using safe practices as described by the manufactures recommendations. The operator of each SMV is responsible for its safe operation.

2.0 The SMV’s will be checked to ensure safe operational readiness on a scheduled basis while in service for its assigned specialized operation. All SMV’S will be checked for operational safety before each response. Any SMV found to be in need of repair shall be removed from service, tagged “out of service”, and reported to the Chief Officer.

3.0 Fire District employees only will be allowed to operate SMV equipment. Non District employees will be permitted to ride on SMV’s if proper safety equipment is used. It will be the discretion of the officer in charge to put more than one person on any of the SMV’S designed for only one passenger. The risk and emergency need will be analyzed.

4.0 All operators of a SMV shall be trained in its operations. No members will be assigned to operate an SMV without the District approval. The training will include hazards associated with the use of each SMV. The District will establish and maintain an operators list. The District will provide training for each different SMV used in the District.

5.0 Operators proficiency in the use of the SMV will be maintained through training sessions authorized by the District. Use of the SMV’S in training missions is encouraged to maintain proficiency and to develop skills of trainees.
