POLICY TITLE: PHYSICAL ABILITY AT INCIDENT SCENE

1.0 PURPOSE

To ensure that the physical condition of all personnel at an incident scene is not limited in scope in the required tasks needed or anticipated at an emergency scene.

2.0

No employees of the district will be allowed to report to any drill or incident alarm while under a physician’s order to sustain from any work activities.

3.0

Any employee who is under physicians orders for light duty, moderate exertion or limited movement may report to drills and alarms. When reporting to alarms, employee is to report to the station only. The incident commander of an emergency incident may request a member on light duty to the scene; this will be an incident by incident basis. No prearranged response will be allowed. Light Duty personnel may be assigned to Rehab or other functions.

4.0

The employee has a responsibility to notify the chief when they are under a doctors care for any reason that would limit their physical abilities to perform at an incident scene.

5.0

Any firefighter can put themselves on light duty due to any injury or illness with out a doctors’ order.

6.0

Any firefighter who responds to a fire scene and is later found to be under a doctors order for no duty or light duty will be disciplined under the penalty of endangering the safety of a firefighter. (A major offense)

7.0

In order to make available to staff, officers and firefighters the status board will be marked in red for any employee not able to physically perform at a fire scene. The Chief or his designee will place employees in or out of service based on discussion with individual firefighter.
